EXPRESSING OURSELVES

EXPRESSING OURSELVES

Writing is all about the writer expressing him or herself. If a writer can’t do that, then they may as well shut down the computer and forget it. Granted we must keep in mind that what we have written may offend someone, however if someone takes offence, isn’t it their problem? I believe so, but ultimately some responsibility lies with us too, as we are writers who want to be taken seriously and we should also act as professional adult people.

As a writer and a human being, I would never intentionally hurt someone’s feelings. The thought of doing that chills my bones. Unfortunately a few weeks ago, I did exactly that. In all my years as a writer I have never received any negative feedback; there is a first time for everything. I found out in a not so nice way that a couple of my articles had upset some people that I know and was once very close to. I received an extremely terse email and a threat, via one of my friends, a death threat actually. Someone was not happy.

Notwithstanding all of this, I apologised to the injured parties via my website. Writing or telephoning was out of the question as my chances of an email being deleted or hung up on would have been pretty good. One cannot express their side of the story under those circumstances.

These people might never look at my website again, but at least I can take comfort in the fact that I’ve done what I feel is best to make amends. I’m very temped to send them a link to the page, but they would undoubtedly ignore or delete it. The articles in question are called How Could You Do This? and Nice Girls get Dumped, So be a Little Bit Bad! Should anyone wish to read them, they are quite self explanatory.

As writers we need to remember that sometimes we are going to get bad feedback, and it is how we choose to deal with that feedback is what matters. Crawling into a dark place and getting depressed is not the way. Getting angry at the criticism is not the way either. Expressing ourselves is why we write, and if we’re not allowed to do that, then I would not be writing. We are lucky to live in democratic society here in Australia, where everyone has a right to their opinions. How many journalists write articles based on assumptions and not many facts. They will even disclose the persons name, and it beats me how they don’t get sued all the time. This is something I believe a writer should never do, without the person’s consent.

I for one will never stop writing as it is my passion, even if my writing is never recognised by the important people in the writing/publishing industry, I will never tire of it. Anyway this is all just my two cents, and that’s what blogging is about, there aren’t any hard and fast rules with blogging. I love it.
